Abstract: Sustainable finance and long-term value creation continue to get attention from practitioners and academics. Why does sustainability matter? Sustainability is about the transition of companies from unsustainable to sustainable business practices that is essential for business survival. We discuss how financial institutions allocate funds to sustainable companies and what investors should do. Committed shareholders tend to engage with companies in good social and environmental practices. We further discuss whether sustainable business practices create firm value in the long run. The traditional valuation approach captures financial value using a risk and returns framework. Valuing sustainable companies would require assessing the firm’s social and environmental value in addition to their financial value.
